Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & SPA는 2019년 유럽 문화 수도로 선정된 이탈리아 Sasso, Matera에 위치한 5성급 스파 리조트다. Sassi di Matera 지구의 건축적 특징이라 할 수 있는 Sassi는 세계에서 가장 오래된 거주 지역 중 하나로, 모랫빛의 응회암(凝灰巖, Tuff: 화산재로 만들어진 암석)으로 만든 동굴 형태의 건축물이 쌓인 듯한 모습을 취하고 있다.

Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & SPA is developed along a ridge of Sasso Caveoso, taking a slice, from the bottom up to a total area of about 5,000 square meters. “Aquatio” is a widespread hotel, a structure that consists of several rooms that are located on a ridge of the Sasso Caveoso district of Matera, in the district called Conche dating back to the thirteenth century.

The Sassi originate from a prehistoric troglodyte settlement and are suspected to be among the first human settlements in Italy. There is evidence that people were living here as early as the year 7000 BC. The term sasso derives from Latin saxum, meaning a hill, rock or great stone. In the 1950s, the government of Italy forcefully relocated most of the population of the Sassi to areas of the developing modern city. The architect Simone Micheli has signed The interior design and lighting design project. The furnishings, true works of art, white, fluid, without edges, float on the floors.

1950년대, 이탈리아 정부는 지역의 문화적인 가치를 보존하기 위해 거주민을 이주시켰으며, 그 후 2000년대부터 시작된 보수공사를 통해 전통적인 고유의 모습은 유지하면서 내부를 다듬고 지역 경제 활성화를 위해 도시 재생 사업을 시작했다. 이곳에 들어서게 된 Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & Spa는 건축가 Simone Micheli가 건축적 복원 및 보수 작업, 내부의 공간과 모든 요소들을 디자인한 공간이다.

Aquatio는 응회암으로 형성된 약 1,500평 규모의 공동(空洞) 공간에 35개의 일반 객실과 스위트, 지중해식 레스토랑, 라운지 바와 스파 등 럭셔리 리조트로서 필요한 모든 시설을 갖추고 있다. 이곳은 오랜 시간 비워져 있던 동굴형 공간인만큼 이끼, 백화현상 등으로 인해 손상이 심했고 색이 바래 있었다. 이에 Simone Micheli는 기존의 모랫빛 응회암을 복원했으며, 여기에 상향식 하부 조명을 실내 공간 곳곳에 설치했다. 이 조명은 불규칙적인 표면의 벽을 따라 다채로운 그림자를 드리우며 신비로운 분위기를 자아낸다.

The excavated surfaces and the vaults have been cleaned of lichen and efflorescence and brought back to their initial condition of color, as if the excavation of those parts had just been completed. Traces of fossil counts appear in the calcium resin, brought back to its natural color, without bleaching, without plastering, in order to highlight its ancient marine origin. Lighting comes from below, through discrete lighting fixtures, strategically positioned to create unique scenographic effects. “Creating emotions” is the concept that animated the entire design process.

Wellness center는 리조트의 중심부에 위치한 곳이다. 150평 이상의 넓은 스파에 인피니티 풀과 온수 풀장, 커플 마사지, 터키식 목욕탕, 사우나 등 투숙객들이 여유롭게 힐링할 수 있는 모든 시설이 갖춰져 있다. Sassi의 독특한 구조는 바닷속에서 형성된 것으로 추정된다. Wellness center의 여러 스파 시설을 이용하다 보면 심해 깊은 곳에서 유영하는 듯 몽환적이고 독특한 경험을 즐길 수 있다.

The wellness center is the space where this motto is best expressed, in fact it is a suggestive place and occupies the deepest heart of the structure, recovering hypogeal rooms dating back to the ninth century. The largest cave compartment houses the infinity edge pool, plastered with traditional techniques. The old cisterns recovered have been transformed into emotional showers and part of the cots has been created by ergonomically modeling the “tuff”. There is no lack of space for single and couple massage, Turkish bath, sauna, beauty cabins, relaxation areas.

35개의 일반 객실과 스위트룸 역시 Simone Micheli가 세심하게 공들여 만들어낸 공간이다. 디자이너는 천연 동굴에서 발전해 고대인들이 머무른 Sassi의 분위기를 최대한 해치지 않을 것, 이로 인해 머무르는 투숙객들이 이곳의 가치를 온전히 느낄 수 있을 것, 마지막으로 Sassi만의 아이덴티티와 독창성을 돋보이게 할 수 있을 것을 목표로 모든 객실을 디자인했다. The 35 rooms were cleverly designed and furnished by the famous architect Simone Micheli, whose architecture, interior and visual design places particular attention to sustainability and the environment. Micheli instills his works with a strong sense of ‘identity and uniqueness’. Structurally, the rooms are modelled on the ancient grottos that were carved into the tufa, and embellished with cutting-edge technology and fittings that allows our guests to experience this unique setting in contemporary luxury.
